Autoconf is a GNU tool that facilitates the creation of “configure” scripts used in installing GNU/Linux source code from `tar balls’.  As can be seen by reading the manual on Autoconf via landing at the GNU Autoconf home page, Autoconf was created in 1991 by David Mackenzie.  He was interviewed a few years ago and this was put into print here:
