Trayvon Martin and an Explanation of the Stand Your Ground Laws

By now, most of the United States has heard the tragic case of Trayvon Martin. In case you are not aware of the facts, Trayvon was a 17-year-old African-American teenager who was walking from a convenience store to his father’s fiance’s home, that is located in a gated community in South Florida. A 28-year-old neighborhood watch volunteer named George Zimmerman spotted Trayvon who was talking on the phone with his girlfriend. Zimmerman called 911 and reported a ‘suspicious black male’ who was checking out the houses and staring at him. The 911 dispatcher tells Zimmerman to stay in his car and lets him know that police are on their way. Zimmerman says ‘they always get away’ and proceeds to leave his car.

Trayvon’s girlfriend told the family that Trayvon said he was being followed. She encouraged him to run and he said he would ‘walk fast.’ His girlfriend told the family…
